WORLD DAY FOR LABORATORY ANIMALS - 24TH APRIL 2010
Treatment of Animals recently obtained heartbreaking photos showing at least 50 beagles confined to crates and loaded like cargo on a Lufthansa transport plane. The beagles were destined for the Charles River Laboratories (CRL) animal-testing facility in Scotland where they will likely be poisoned and killed in drug and pesticide tests.
CRL condemns tens of millions of animals to confinement, poisoning, mutilation, and death in its own laboratories and those of its customers. The company was recently fined $14,000 after 32 monkeys were cooked to death when a room at its facility in Reno, Nev., overheated.
By transporting these animals, Lufthansa is facilitating and profiting from the abuse of animals in laboratories.
Some years ago South Africans for the Abolition of Vivisection negotiated with South African Airways who gave the assurance that they would not transport animals to laboratories. Wild-caught primates were the preferred animals to be exported from Africa to Laboratories. We are currently drawing up a list of airlines that have joined the embargo on transporting animals to be used in laboratories. It is not known whether SAA is still on the list of ethical airlines.
Who is the Charles River ?
The Charles River Breeding Laboratory was founded in 1947 by a young veterinarian, Dr. Henry Foster, in Boston Massachusetts with the goal of supplying the research community with purpose bred laboratory animals. Starting with rodents and graduating to monkeys and beagle dogs , the CRL emerged from the cottage industries in 1966 when it became an international company expanding to France, New Jersey Canada, Germany, Spain, Hungary , the Czech Republic, Japan, the U.K, China and Finland.Of course, as every good doctor knows, the results of tests cannot be extrapolated to humans. Besides, if the animal tests show that a substance is poisonous, it goes on to the market anyway, with a warning! So why test on animals?
ON 24TH APRIL DO TAKE A MOMENT TO COMMEMORATE THE DEATH OF MILLIONS OF ANIMALS WHO ARE POISONED, BURNED, SCALDED AND SUFFER PAINFUL TORTURES IN A FRAUDULENT SCIENCE WHICH SERVES ONLY THE VAST VESTED INTERESTS.
